A Thanksgiving Memory

2005 November

One of my most treasured memories of Winnie is from November 2005, when she, other relatives, my sister Gretchen and I gathered in Lexington, Ky., to celebrate Thanksgiving with my dear late Aunt Helen Pohl's 102nd birthday. As we sat around the dinner table, it was suggested that we each talk about our lives. When it was Winnie's turn, she got tears in her eyes as she spoke with such love about the people - especially children - she worked with as a nurse, social worker and counselor. Her empathy was palpable. As Winnie spoke, I remember thinking: What an amazing woman! What a full life! What joy and kindness she brings to so many people! Most of all, selfishly, I wished that I lived closer to her, so I could get to know her better and be her friend as well as her cousin. From spending time with her in the presence of her sisters and late brother and her nieces and nephews, I could feel how beloved she was to all. What a great loss. But what a great blessing to all who knew her. May her example help us become even more joyful and compassionate human beings. Sylvia Lang
