Canoeing

Mary, her friend Cindy and I shared an especially huge adventure canoeing on the Russian River one beautiful summer day. Understand that Winnie was not a great swimmer, nor did she love the water, but she braved it with us anyway. What a trooper. We got off to a late start so we were one of the last onto the river. That meant that when Mary and Cindy capsized their canoe (note, Winnie and I stayed high and dry!) and it became caught under a tree with a fast current there was no one to help but Wink and me. And a big help we weren’t. I recall that our most plausible solution was simply to leave the canoe there and have Mary and Cindy join us in ours for the remainder of the ride. After an amazing effort (primarily by Mary and Cindy), including the threat of extremities being trapped between the canoe and the tree, and a lot of cheering from Wink from dry land, their canoe was freed and we finished out our trip with an exciting story to tell. She was very brave, indeed.
